Democracy, individual liberty, fairness and your part in the community.
The ideas behind everyday life
Democracy gives people a say in how they are governed. The rule of law means that laws apply to everyone. Individual liberty protects personal choices within the law. Respect and tolerance help people with different beliefs live together.
Rights go with responsibilities
People can express their views, follow a religion or have no religion, and take part in peaceful public life. Responsibilities include obeying the law, respecting other people’s rights, and contributing to the community. Freedom does not give someone permission to harm others.
Taking part
Volunteering, helping a neighbour and supporting a local organisation are practical ways to contribute. In a democracy, disagreements can be raised through discussion, elected representatives and peaceful campaigns.
